IPL Capillaries
IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, uses the power of broad wavelength light to administer topical heat, improving the appearance of broken capillaries.
The treatment targets deep into the skin layers, as far as the hypodermis, to treat problems on the surface and ones which have arisen from deeper in the skin, for effective results. The range and wavelength of the light emitted during the treatment is adjusted to accommodate specific skin needs and concerns.
The light energy is absorbed by melanin (responsible for skin pigment) and haemoglobin (red blood cells). The damage to these structures causes them to be reabsorbed by the body, or brought to the surface of the skin to be sloughed off, leaving rejuvenated skin behind.
In general, broken capillaries are caused by either skin trauma, like squeezing a pimple too forcefully, intense microdermabrasion, or even sneezing, or by excessive dilation of the blood vessels from, for example, taking hot showers, being in cold, wintery air, eating spicy foods, exercising, or drinking alcohol.
Capillary walls are very elastic, and blood vessels can lose their ability to contract if they’re frequently dilated, causing them to remain enlarged.
Genetics play a major role in how susceptible you are to broken blood vessels, though they’re more common in anyone with sensitive skin, acne, or rosacea, and especially rampant in the winter, thanks to fluctuating hot-and-cold temps.

Frequently asked questions
What Is The Procedure For IPL Capillaries?
IPL Capillaries is for all skin tones, but tends to work best on fair skin that is relatively elastic and “freckle-prone”. Deeper skin tones have shown great results with The Well’s experienced practitioners, but may need additional treatments as deeper tones require a decreased wavelength intensity to avoid triggering a pigment response.
IPL treatments do cause some discomfort, so The Well apply a topical numbing cream to reduce the sensation, which is often compared to the snapping of a rubber band on the skin.
During the treatment both you and the practitioner will wear protective glasses. The skin will be cleansed and a thin coat of gel will be applied to cool the skin. The IPL handpiece is then applied directly on to the skin to commence treatment.
The device pulses flashes of light, which continue until the desired area has been treated. The decollete takes about 60 minutes of treatment time. Once the treatment is finished, the gel is removed and a cold compress may be applied if needed for several minutes. A nourishing moisturiser and broad spectrum sunscreen are then applied as the final step.
A course of 3 -5 treatments is usually recommended for best results.
What Happens After A IPL Capillaries Treatment?
Immediately post-treatment there may be minor redness and swelling, similar to that of sunburn. Dryness and flaking may also occur. This usually resolves within 3 – 7 days. Sun protection is needed daily. The capillaries gradually fade over the next 4 weeks.
